The University of Iowa's Latinx Council is pleased to announce the April 29, 2021 virtual retreat. 

This year's speaker is Jorge Guerra, Lecturer in the U Iowa Latina/o/x Studies Program and the Magid Center for Undergraduate Writing.  His topic is, "Latinx & Our Learning Perseverance:  Embracing Latinx History for the Self and Growing Communities."

Born and raised in South Central Los Angeles, Jorge Guerra is a child of Guatemalan immigrants who arrived to the United States during the Guatemalan Civil War. He received his B.A. in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing from California State University, Long Beach, and he received his M.F.A. in Fiction at the Iowa Writers' Workshop. He teaches several popular courses for the Latina/o/x minor including "Queer Latina/o/x Studies," and "Survival and Identity in Latinx Immigration Literature." In addition to his teaching, Guerra serves as the faculty advisor for the Storm Lake Scholars Program, and mentors students in the Unidos Living Learning Community.
