The Latina/o/x Studies Program wishes to congratulate Dr. Lina-Maria Murillo on the publication of her article, "Espanta Cigüeñas: Race and Abortion in the US-Mexico Borderlands" in the Summer 2023 issue of Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society from The University of Chicago Press. The article revisits a landmark U.S. abortion rights case in light of its reliance on racialized tropes regarding medical care in Mexico, bringing those legal narratives into conversation with research into actual practice and lived experience of abortion care in the U.S.-Mexico borderlands. The article was named Winner of the 2023 Catharine Stimpson Prize for Outstanding Feminist Scholarship. Congratulations to Dr. Murillo!
